The Tongass Avenue Improvements project is a multi-year road rehabilitation project in Ketchikan, Alaska, that began in 2024. Owned by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (AK DOT&PF) and funded by the Federal Highway Administration, the project includes improvements to approximately one mile of Tongass Avenue.
proHNS provided construction management and administration services throughout the project, supporting the successful delivery of improvements while maintaining quality, compliance, and project controls.

Project Scope
The Tongass Avenue Improvements project includes a broad range of transportation, pedestrian, and safety improvements throughout the downtown corridor, including:
- Rehabilitation of existing asphalt and concrete pavement
- New curb, gutter, and sidewalk construction
- Sidewalk and pedestrian accessibility improvements
- New pedestrian-activated Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) crossings
- New bicycle facilities
- Lane reconfiguration and corridor improvements
- New traffic signal poles
- Improved bus stop pull-outs
- Safety and level-of-service improvements for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists
