proHNS recently submitted 95 percent design plans for this high-profile trail project along Haines’ downtown waterfront that will construct pedestrian-friendly gravel alignments using cost-effective materials and methods. Challenges included designing a route through tidal zones, tying into a parking lot well above the trail’s grade, and maintaining ADA accessibility throughout the route. Services and deliverables provided on this project included multiple site visits with stakeholders, topographic survey, base map development, design and analysis of alternative alignments, presentation to the Haines Borough Planning Commission, technical specifications, and construction-ready plan sets. Construction will begin once the Chilkoot Indian Association (the Haines Borough’s funding partner) completes its environmental review process and the Borough procures all necessary permits.
