Gustavus Airport

This FAA-funded project addressed multiple safety concerns by resurfacing and rehabilitating the existing taxiways, aprons, and runways. It was one of the first projects in Alaska to bid with the new Standard Specifications for Airport Construction, which are based on FAA’s recently issued AC 150/5370-10H Standard Specifications for Construction of Airports. Despite the hurdles this project faced, our team (including AK DOT&PF and the Contractor) was able to collectively respond to the PFAS contamination at the Gustavus Airport and continually coordinate with State agencies such as DEC, DNR, and others. In early 2021, there were serious concerns the project would be unable to proceed, but a partnering-based approach to the issue had construction move ahead and complete by Fall 2021.
