A new community-led effort is underway to make travel safer for everyone in Haines, Alaska, whether you walk, bike, roll, drive, or ride. The Haines Borough and Chilkoot Indian Association are developing a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan through the federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program. This plan will use local input, safety studies, and crash data to identify problem areas and guide real improvements that save lives.
Having an SS4A-compliant plan will also open the door to federal funding that communities without one can’t access, helping Haines compete for dollars to design and build safety projects identified in the plan.
The SS4A program’s goal is to eliminate roadway deaths and serious injuries by improving safety for all users: drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, mobility device users, public transit riders, emergency responders, and commercial operators alike.
The first step in this effort is a safety survey to gather information from local residents that identifies traffic areas of concern using an interactive map to pinpoint problem areas. These surveys can be completed on the Haines SS4A webpage, and are distributed on paper at community facilities such as the Haines Borough and Chilkoot Indian Association Administration Buildings, Haines Library, Haines School, and Haines Senior Center, among others.
To learn more about the program and how you can help contribute to the safety survey, visit the project’s dedicated webpage (www.safestreetsforhaines.com). The survey closes December 31, 2025.
