The City and Borough of Sitka (CBS)’s Sitka Terminal Improvements Project is a multi-phased infrastructure enhancement of the aging facilities at the Rocky Gutierrez Airport. This project will remodel the existing main terminal building and include the construction of two supporting terminal structures. These improvements advance the facility’s longevity and expand its footprint to accommodate the growing number of airline passengers in the Southeast Alaska region.
The first phase of the terminal improvement project began in 2023 and involves constructing a new two-story addition to the southeast side of the terminal. The addition will include a new passenger screening area, gate lounges, restrooms, and a concessions area.
proHNS was contracted by PTS and the CBS to help provide construction management services on-site, including coordinating and inspecting the project while the existing terminal remains active and open. The project’s Construction Manager, Eric Strong, PE, facilitates constant communication and oversight between CBS personnel, the prime contractor and subcontractors, engineers and architects, TSA and FAA officials, AK DOT&PF, Delta and Alaska Airlines representatives, terminal vendors, and the public.
Between Phase 1 and Phase 2 (which will remodel the existing terminal interior and make small upgrades to the curb-side area), the project will double the terminal size from 18,000 square feet to 36,000 square feet.
