Denali National Park is a world-renowned landscape in Alaska with six million acres of forested valleys, high alpine tundra, and mountains, all which surround its namesake, Denali. The park is popular for backcountry activity and supports a bustling tourist economy, predominantly in the summer season.
A single road, built in 1930, provides access through Denali National Park. However, in 2021 the Pretty Rocks Landslide forced a road closure at Mile 43. While this active landslide area has incurred frequent road repairs throughout the years, this most recent slide removed so much earth from the hillside that carving out the road was no longer deemed suitable. As a result, the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA), along with the National Parks Service (NPS) created the Polychrome Area Improvements plan, which includes the construction of a 475 ft bridge to span across the slide area, reinstating safe vehicle access through the park. The project is scheduled for completion in July 2026, at which point the public will have access to the full stretch of road through Denali National Park.
Granite Construction is the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) for the $200+ million project. proHNS is contracted on behalf of the WFLHD to provide engineering staff on site in Denali National Park to conduct construction management and administration services including site inspections.
